Receiving "not enough free space" error when syncing iTunes

Does anybody have an alternate solution for the syncing error received after the latest iTunes upgrade? I get the "not enough free space" error even though iTunes still shows 21GB available on my iPod Touch.

Occasionally iTunes may incorrectly estimate the size of the sync selections and not correctly account for content already on the device. See Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod using your computer - Apple Support. Set your options to sync with selected playlists and start with a smaller selection that will sync correctly, a subsequent sync of more of your library should then be successful.
