Why can't I see the the “Use dark backgrounds for messages.” option in mail veiwing preferences. I am running monterey on a Mac Studio?

Thanks, I have just discovered for myself that the "Use dark backgrounds for messages" only appears when the system is in dark mode. I would like to be able to turn on dark oe light mode in Mail independent of the system settings.

As it turns out, if you have System Preferences > General > Appearance set to "Auto", the setting for "Use dark backgrounds…" hides.
Don't know…
Try restarting in Safe Mode then restart normally.
Interesting here is my set-up.
The Mail Background will auto change to Dark After the Sun is scheduled to Set at night and stay that way until the Sun is Set to Rise in my location.
Then perhaps the Other Contributor may have some insights ?
