Final Cut Pro X 10.6.1 on an iMax

Hello All. In the middle of editing a major 40 minute 4 K video documentary FCP suddenly moved files from my external SSD drive to the desktop. All the links failed and I had to redo them. Only about 1 in 3 project files linked while the others did not link even though I could manually point to the particular file. I dealt with 4 good Apple support people but none solved the issue and none followed up. I am not complaining but I was left hanging with a major problem. I have since rebuilt the entire library in question and edit timeline. Things seems stable so far. This issue questions the stability of FCP and the ability of support technicians if they are not completely familiar with the software. Diagnostic files were provided and I was happy to pay but this was not requested. Has anyone encounter the linking issue and developed a way to resolve it?

The most obvious thing from the report is sophos. You should thoroughly uninstall it.

Also, there are plenty of old plugins that are not supported in recent versions of macOS: flip4mac, silverlight, sharepoint.

This suggests that you have upgraded year over year for a while. At some point this may cause issues. But start with sophos, which offers zero protection and is probably blocking some files and be directly responsible for the problem at hand.

Very kind of you Ian to investigate this. Just to add a little more clarity. The four hours of investigation by Apple people yielded nothing. My new rebuilt library is fully functional although I worry the same will happy to it. I run FCP from my desktop but store all files and the library on an external SSD 2 T drive. I work in proxy with rendering off then convert over to 4K after turning rendering back on. I am a medium level user of FCP. All I can think off is that my fingers were moving relatively fast over the key board and I inadvertently triggered an 'odd' command or two. The library appeared on the desk top and the linking issue emerged. I have since deleted this desktop library and set up a copy under another name on the SSD, hence things seem to be stable. I have upgraded to 10.6.2. I wonder if I may have exposed a FCP issue? Anyway, I am very grateful for your assistance. Regards, Mike

Please tell us more.

What exactly is your mac model? I suppose you meant iMac, but please be more specific.

Also: what happened when media failed to Relink? Any messages?

Any particular type of media failed? Or was it apparently random?

Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here.

Use the “additional text” button and paste the report into the text box.

This is essential to let us know about possible software issues that could have an impact on FCP.

Thank you Luis for taking an interest. I run iMac, Retina 4K, 21.5 inch, 3.6 Quad core with Intel core i7, 16 gig ram running Radeon Pro 555 2 gig and 1 terabyte of internal storage. There were no error messages when relink failed. I could import a file OK but could not relink the same original project file. Link failure was more-or-less random but usually the first five video files loaded OK and all the stand alone audio files. A typical project might have 30+ video files. I will run Etrecheck but I now attach the FCP diagnostics if I can work out how to do this.
