I presume that you have programmed it with you fingerprint, in which case I suggest shutting down and restarting in safe mode followed by a normal restart.

Do you have an Apple Silicon Mac? One is required to use Touch ID on a separate keyboard.
I hadn't. starting in safe mode fixed the problem with the fingerprint ID on my new keyboard. i will remember safe mode now.
