Why can't I sign into my Mac with my fingerprint?

I have a new Apple keyboard with Touch ID. Why Can't I log onto my Mac with it?

Mac mini, macOS 12.3

Did you follow these instructions:

Magic Keyboard with Touch ID - Apple Support

Do you have an Apple Silicon Mac? One is required to use Touch ID on a separate keyboard.

I hadn't. starting in safe mode fixed the problem with the fingerprint ID on my new keyboard. i will remember safe mode now.

I presume that you have programmed it with you fingerprint, in which case I suggest shutting down and restarting in safe mode followed by a normal restart.
