Hi,
I can see my iPhone in Finder's Sidebar. However, when I clicked on it, it says "If you are experiencing problems with your iPhone, you can restore its original settings by clicking Restore iPhone."
I do not have the button bar as shown in the article below.

With the introduction of iOS 15 which this iPhone is running Apple has issued a Device Update similar to the one referenced below
Personally have never Hardwired the two devices together , so refer to below image from Monterey 12.3.1 and have an iPhone 12 running iOS 15.4.1.
Although never wired together I did get the " Device Software Update" no less than twice.
I have updated the software but when I connected my iPhone to my MacBook, it still gives the message below.
The contents of the iPhone “iPhone” could not be read. Click Restore to restore this iPhone to factory settings.

However, I didn't get the message for Device Update as you mentioned. I got a message to restore my iPhone to factory setting.
