In my opinion, HDMI is NOT as good as Thunderbolt or DisplayPort family (including DisplayPort encapsulated in USB-C).
HDMI has fewer data pathways, and is much more bandwidth limited. it also uses higher voltages so top speeds are even more limited and it generates more heat.
If you reattempting to connect an Apple Studio display, it has ONLY ThunderBolt input, no HDMI.
+1 any TB labeled port on the back should work fine.

+1. You need to use the TB connection in order to power all the additional ports, camera, speakers, etc. on the monitor.
