I cannot get enough access to swipe bar at bottom of screen to close apps, is there other options than just swiping up? I have found the button really nice now im lost

If your iPad cover is preventing you from using the full set of gestures, such as swiping-up from the bottom of the screen, your choice of protective cover might not be suitable for your iPad.
Presumably your iPad cover is not of Apple origin - but is from one of many third-party manufacturers. Not all third-party cases are properly designed, or are intended for some models of iPad.
