How to stop Auto-update apps

Can I stop apps from updating on low power mode?

After charging my phone and then unplugging it, I see apps automatically update. I would think that they should be updating while plugged in. This happens even when on low power mode.

Is there a setting to force apps to update only when charging?

my settings says app updates not available when on low power mode, but it looks like it’s still updating.

What does the app update icon animation really mean? Does it indicate downloading? Installing? Or is it just a visual cue that the app updated?

Hey there Rick Miller2,

With Low Power Mode enabled, this will reduce or affect the following features:

  • "5G (except for video streaming) on iPhone 12 models1
  • Auto-Lock (defaults to 30 seconds)
  • Display brightness
  • Display refresh rate (limited up to 60 Hz) on iPhone and iPad models with ProMotion display2
  • Some visual effects
  • iCloud Photos (temporarily paused)
  • Automatic downloads
  • Email fetch
  • Background app refresh"

Use Low Power Mode to save battery life on your iPhone or iPad

If you prefer to manually update your applications and disable automatic updates, we recommend using the steps below:

Open the App Store.
Tap your profile icon at the top of the screen.
Scroll to see pending updates and release notes. Tap Update next to an app to update only that app, or tap Update All.

Take care!
