iPhone microphone with Bluetooth audio

I frequently call someone for extended periods, and I like Bluetooth headphones for the convenience and the privacy. However, my current headphones have very bad microphone quality, and I would like to be able to use the default iPhone mic. I know this is possible to some degree- I’ve been in call and tried to unmute, which opened a drop down menu with Mute, iPhone mic, and Bluetooth mic as options- but I’d prefer to be able to do this consistently. Is there a setting I can change, or a way to activate the iPhone microphone consistently?

Hi, nana8901,

Thanks for stopping by the Apple Support Communities to get help using Bluetooth headphones with your iPhone.

When you have a pair of Bluetooth headphones paired and connected to your iPhone, all incoming and outgoing audio use the headphones. You cannot listen through the Bluetooth headphones while speaking into the iPhone microphone, however.

If you do not wish to use the microphone of your Bluetooth headphones, you must use either a different set of headphones with a better microphone, or the iPhone itself for both listening and speaking to the person you are on the phone with.

If you'd like to see additional options for using Bluetooth in the future, you can let Apple know here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple.

Best.
