Pink screen on external monitor

Good afternoon,

I have a 2020 iPad Pro, and my brother has a 2018 iPad Pro. I was trying to connect mine to the monitor I use to work (HP Envy 27s) through a USB-C hub, but I was getting a pinky image. Both are updated to the latest iPadOS version.

The HP Envy 27s has:

  • 1 DisplayPort 1.2 input
  • 1 HDMI 2.0 input (with 4k 60Hz)
  • 1 HDMI 1.4 input (with 2560x1440 60Hz)

After doing some tests:

  • Both iPads display a pinky image on the 1.4 HDMI input
  • The HDMI cable works OK (tested with other devices)
  • Switching to another HDMI cable doesn’t resolve the issue.
  • The USB-C hub and the 1.4 HDMI input work OK (tested with the same HDMI cable connected to the USB-C hub but with a Windows laptop instead of the iPads and the image is displayed correctly)
  • The iPads display the image correclty when connected to the HDMI 2.0 input or the DisplayPort 1.2 input.

The only difference I’ve spotted between the HDMI 2.0 and the 1.4 is that the HDMI 2.0 scales the monitor resolution from 4k down to 1920 x 1200, whereas the 1.4 stays at its native resolution (2560 x 1440).Color profiles are OK on the monitor and the iPad settings for the screen are correctly set to SDR (In fact, the setting is grayed out since my monitor doesn’t support HDR).

Any ideas?

Hello there aleixjife,

The common denominator here seems to be your USB-C hub. For expected use, you'd may need to try using another hub, or stop use the USB-C hub altogether. In some cases, you may need to contact the USB-C hub manufacturer to ensure they support Apple iPad connections. Otherwise, Apple's official documentation seems to indicate a direct connection is suggested as well: Connect iPad to a display with a cable

We wish you the best of luck!

Take care.

Hey,

I appreciate your answer but with all due respect it wasn’t useful at all. Indeed, the USB C hub seems to be the common denominator, but it’s not the cause of the issue:

  • The USB C hub WORKS fine on that same monitor input when plugged to another device (such as my laptop).
  • The USB C hub WORKS fine with the iPad Pro (both mine and my brother’s) when connected to another monitor input.
  • The USB C hub FAILS with both my iPad and my brother’s on that HDMI input.
  • That monitor input is working perfectly fine with other devices directly connected to it through HDMI.

BONUS: I’ve also tested another USB-C hub (an HP one) and on that monitor input, the picture is still pinky.

So, the conclusion is that it’s something related to iPad OS, not the USB C hubs nor my monitor, am I wrong?

Hello aleixjife,

The best way to isolate the issue is to try to test the iPads plugged directly into the monitor. This will confirm whether there is an issue with the iPads.

If there is no issue, then the issue would most likely be the compatibility between the iPad and the USB C hubs. At that point, we would suggest reaching out to the USB C hub manufacturer for additional assistance.

Cheers.
