Screen and app size on an Apple iPad 2021 9th Gen 10.2"

Good day,

I just purchased my Apple iPad 2021 9th Gen 10.2" and I restored all my apps to this ipad via icloud from my iPhone 11 and are working fine, however there is a definite resolution/screen size difference between the 2. When running various apps/games on my iPhone, I see a lot more of the screen and background, but on my new iPad, everything seems to be "zoomed" and larger so I do not see as much detail(s). I already looked in Settings>>Accessibility and Zoom is off, and under Display & Text Size, everything listed is set to off (except Reduce Transparency and Auto Brightness)

Can anyone offer suggestions or why this is happening? I would like to enjoy my games but not when the screen is so large and zoomed that I do not see the whole background. This is not an app specific issue.

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, skeefiez11!

We understand you're seeing a difference in the apps you have restored to your iPad from your iPhone backup. We'd be happy to help out.

You mentioned it's happening in multiple games. Is it all games, or a select few? Also, do you see similar results in built-in apps like Messages or Mail?

Have you tried to Restart your iPad yet? If you have, and you've already checked out the resource If your Home screen icons are magnified on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, we recommend reaching out to Apple directly next: Get Support

We hope this clears things up.

Have a great day!

Hello,

All games are bigger and do not have as much expanded detail as on my iPhone 11.

I restarted my iPad multiple times since I got it a few days ago but again it is not the icons but the apps themselves for example by comparison:

On iPhone:

and same screen on iPad:

As you can see, a portion of the screen is essentially cut off when viewing on ipad. I can find no answers on how to resolve this and have the same view on the iPad since this will affect gameplay

Thanks!

The screen aspect-ratio (i.e., hight vs. width) of your iPhone and iPad differ. As relates to the illustrated Landscape view, the App Developer has likely chosen to horizontally crop the iPad screen (loosing a narrow strip on each side) while preserving the same full hight.

Had the Developer instead chosen to simply adjust the screen view of the iPhone to match the different aspect-ratio of the iPad, the image would be visibly distorted; e.g., the central figure would appear very thin). Conversely, had the Developer instead chosen to stretch the iPad view to fill the wider iPhone screen, the central figure would appear short and fat.

In conclusion, what you see is not a fault - but is instead a conscious programming decision by the App Developer to accommodate a different screen aspect-ratio.

As different displays have differing aspect ratio, this is common practice. As an example, when watching a movie on TV, you may see a black band at top and bottom of the screen when watching a wide-screen movie on a “standard” 16:9 screen - or bands on either side of the screen when viewing 4:3 content. You can sometimes change your TV settings to fill the available screen, but in so doing “crop” some of the otherwise visible screen content.
