Emails stopped working due to Microsoft mail server upgrade

M MAC version operating system is 10.11.6 (I am at the highest version for my Mac. My only other option is to upgrade our Macs which is a pricey excercise which I can't do at the moment)

My MAC Mail version is 9.3 (which doesn't work now - so Im having to use Outlook (web version - which doesn't enable me to export my emails - and my mailbox keeps filling up. ...and I have a complete aversion to Outlook - it's so clunky and thinks it knows better!)

I understand that Microsoft have put a new level of encryption into emails which is not compatible with Mac Mail 9.3. Question - I appreciate that Apple no longer support my version of Mail, but surely someone must have picked up the baton from Apple and come up with an email app. that is similar to mail but actually works with my operating system and successfully handshakes with the Microsoft email server. But which is it? Thanks

Support by 3rd party software developers for macOS 10.11 has pretty much dried up.

Microsoft no longer sells a version of Office that is compatible with that version of macOS.

If your organization supports IMAP or POP3 access to your Exchange server, you should be able to configure the account in the mail app on your Mac to access it that way. Otherwise, you really need to consider upgrading to a machine that can run a supported version of macOS. You are now 6 major versions behind in terms of macOS updates.

I would check the Thunderbird download site to see if thy have a version that works with your computer's operating system. It is an excellent email app which has a number of features others do not have. If the compatible app is not clear, then do a download and see if it works. I've used Thunderbird for years and I like it's stability. it does not have all the problems being reported here with using the Mail app.
