Apple TV 4K remote will not fast forward

The Apple TV 4K remote will not continuously fast forward when I hold down right arrow nor will it continuously rewind when I hold down the left arrow. The show will just say paused. I will have to repeatedly click to rewind or fast forward 10 seconds per click. The remote will fast forward or rewind if I use the touch bar, but I personally like to keep the touch bar off.


I have tried:

  • restarting the device
  • checking for updates
  • unplugging


Please note that this is only day 3 of using Apple TV which is really frustrating because I am coming from amazon and this was never an issue with 3x less cost.

Does this happen in a specific app or any? If it's a specific app, it may be the app developers programming. If it occurs in all apps test in the Apple TV app and be sure you're following the steps outlined in the section "Rewind or fast-forward" here: Control what’s playing in the Apple TV app


You can also view the section quoted below.


"You can move rapidly forward or backward through video in several ways. During playback, use the smart TV or device remote to do any of the following:

  • Skip backward or forward 10 seconds: Press the left or right button to skip backward or forward. Press again to skip another 10 seconds.
  • Rewind or fast-forward continuously: Press and hold the left or right button to rewind or fast forward, or press either button repeatedly to cycle through rewind or fast-forward speed options (2x, 3x, 4x). Press the center or play button to resume playback."
