iPad unlock

I buy storage units that have gone to auction and in the last unit I bid on there we’re two iPads. Of course they’re locked and I have absolutely no way of getting in touch with the units owner (storage facility privacy regulations).

Is there anything I can do to unlock these devices? Or do they need to get filed 86…?

Unless you can independently trace and contact the original owner, the iPads are (and will forever remain) useless to you. Given that you purchased the contents of an abandoned storage unit, you managing to trace the owner is likely to be a vanishingly remote possibility.

Here are the Apple support pages that outline the Activation Lock - and the only mechanisms by which it can be turned off:

Activation Lock for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Turn off Activation Lock – Apple Support

As you will discover, unless you are the owner of the AppleID that was last used to activate the device, you’ll not be able to defeat or bypass the Activation Lock. With documentary evidence that you are the original owner (such as sales receipt showing the serial number), Apple may be prepared to assist - otherwise they and nobody here will be able to help you.

Return these to the Auctioneer:

Seems you have been scammed, though a full-assumption, on my part. Only the current owner can sign themselves out of it. So, you need to contact the person who run this action. This is the sight they should have used, prior to allowing bids to proceed. What to do Before you Sell, Give Away, or Trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support. They should have known better.
