You can upgrade to macOS Catalina 10.15.7 (but no later) to use Microsoft Office. Follow the link for macOS Catalina here: How to get old versions of macOS - Apple Support.

Make sure you have a backup first!

Microsoft Office updates enhance the apps and/or improver security. But they apply to one specific Office version.

What the message is telling you is your OS is too old for the version of Office you have. That means an Upgrade to a new OS. In this case to 10.15.0 Catalina. Or later will work most likely too.

What Mac year and OS version are your now running?

To upgrade your OS to 10.15 Catalina, the oldest OS that MS Office now supports, your Mac must be 2012 or newer.

If you tell us exactly what iMac and OS you have, we may be able to give more specific advice about upgrade possibility. Right now, you have us talking in generalities.
