Setting group ringtones

(New to iPhone)

On my old flipphone, you could set one 'default' ringtone for all unknown callers, another ringtone for all 'contact list' callers, and then switch few individual contacts to have a unique ringtone. So you knew right away if it was 'I know you', 'I DON'T know you', Mom, The Boss, etc.

Am I reading this right, that I only have 'ONE' default ring, and if I want unknown callers separated from known callers, I have to go through all 600 contacts to set them off the 'default'?

(Argghh!)

I'd like to avoid going through the thousands of contacts I have and change each of them manually. Something comparable to the "remove duplicates" contacts options on iTunes ? Thanks
