Video clips not playing properly anymore

Also, where did these H.264 files come from? A GoPro? We've had intermittent issues where GoPro 10 video turns black. Quitting FCP and reopening the library has always fixed it though.

Yeah, something strange about the mp4. It plays in Monterey QuickTime but at ~2 FPS.

A simple ffmpeg transcode created a file that plays properly.

$ ffmpeg -i badfile.mp4 output.mp4

Using the Right-click "Services->Encode selected video file" to an mp4 did not fix the issue. I didn't try Compressor.

You have Chrome and its evil keystone daemons. They kill video applications by hogging the system videotoolbox. See https://chromeisbad.com for why this is, and how to remove them completely. After removing them you will need to delete and reinstall FCP.

For some reason Monterey 12.3.1, Big Sur 11.6.4, Mojave 10.14.6 QuickTime Player display only every 15th I-frame of that 30 fps H.264 .mp4. All P-frames are skipped. FCP 10.6.1 displays P-frames black.

IINA, VLC and Avidemux display it OK in Monterey 12.3.1.

On the other hand in Mojave 10.14.6 and El Capitan 10.11.6 QuickLook, QuickTime Player 7 and MPEG Streamclip display it OK.

Re-wrapping as .mp4 does not help:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c copy output.mp4

Invisor does not readily show anything obvious wrong with the movie.

For the last paragraph please post an EtreCheck report https://etrecheck.com giving the application Full Disk Access in Privacy System Preferences. Copy the report an d use the Add Text button to paste the result into reply box. 

Can you give the complete specs of the H.264 from MediaInfo? Would it be possible to upload a couple of clips to WeTransfer?

Make a new admin user and test the application with media on the system drive without any other connected devices.

Also get rid of the Samsung drivers. They're not needed on a Mac.

H.264 is the most commonly used codec, and that's a very common format. The clips I have in that format continue to play perfectly on the systems I have, all running the current OS and current FCP. What shot this? Would it be possible to upload a clip of H.264 clips to WeTransfer?

I think Luis will confirm that there is no problem with most H.264 files. The files from this camera are unique. Simply re-encoding the files might fix them. You might try converting them in the QuickTime player or in Compressor to see if that works.

Tom, I confirm. There is no problem in general with h264. There must be something peculiar about how these camera files are encoded. The two extra pixels in “buffer” look weird to me.

In 10.6.2 you can no longer drag and drop transitions from the Transitions browser to connected clips, nor to replace a transition in the primary storyline. To apply a transition select the clip or edit point you want to add the transition to, then double click the transition in the browser that you want to add to the project.
