Preventing the reordering of spaces

My Macbook Pro has this irritating little quirk and over time, it has gotten right under my skin.

I'm a software Dev. and utilise the control + arrow keys to switch between my editor and my production canvas in their respective spaces. So Space 1 will display my editing program and Space 2 will display the app I am building. My workflow is..

  • Do some edits in Space 1
  • CTRL + Right cursor to check Space 2 and view the changes
  • CTRL + Left cursor to go back to my editor in Space 1
  • ...

It is quite simple but it is effective and allows me to be really productive. Then, for no apparent reason, MAC OS will decide that my editor should be moved over to Space 4! Which needlessly breaks my flow and means I have to revert to MY desired layout. After putting up with this pointless opinionated niggle for many years, I finally broke out of my zone and researched a solution. Which I found and involved visiting Mission Control and switching off the “Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use”, setting.

'Great', I thought, though surprised at how long I had put up with that seemingly pointless default. Until a short while later when it did it again 😩. After further research, it seems that I have no control at all over Spaces which are in full screen and my Macbook will frequently troll me!

So basically, I am in an endless tussle with my laptop. I configure my desktop how I want it, MAC OS rearranges it to how it thinks I should have it, I then correct it, MAC OS then throws it off, again!

WTF, Apple??

This is F annoying. And yes it had led me to swear!! Is it at all possible to turn off this opinionated default? I shouldn't have to fight with a ÂŁ2k+ device like this, it should be giving back rubs not headaches!

Rank over, thanks in advance!

I don't think they will switch around once created, but if you open the apps in a different order, they will be in a different order.

After some testing this morning, I can see the pattern, I can't see how it could be useful to anyone, however.

Anytime a window is toggled into full-screen (if I were to maximise a streaming site like Udemy or YouTube, for example), that Space moves over to the rightmost slot. If I exit full screen then it will move back to its former position. I will send feedback to Apple. I have observed people irritated by this on various forums dating back to 2011.

Once again, thanks for your input.

Full Screen Desktops are created dynamically in the order they are opened.

I don't ever use Full Screen, so if you see behavior that contradicts that, I would send feedback to Apple.
