GarageBand is not recording sound for me. I have tried all of the input and output combination, I have checked preferences, and made sure the track isn't muted, but it looks like the sound isn't even registering. I cannot hear upon playback, but it also doesn't display a waveform for the sound — it appears to be empty. I have included a screenshot of this. I would appreciate your help.

I am talking about *before* you record. If I start up Garageband in its default state with my internal microphone as the input, I see action on the input meter for the channel.
Are you able to monitor what you are trying to record?
What exactly do you mean by this? I am quite new to the software. Also, I tried ZoomAudioDevice instead of System Setting or Built-in-Output/Input and it was able to record the metronome beats even though I could not hear it and it didn't pick up the sound I was creating. I have also tried with and without headphones to no avail.
I tried all of these steps, but it still isn't working. Do you have any other ideas for what could be causing this?
I mean, can you hear whatever it is you are recording in your headphones.
At the very least you should see a response on the VU meter when you tap or speak into the mic.
I cannot, that is the issue. Nothing is registering. The screenshot in my original post was after recording sound — it remained completely blank and didn't seem to pick anything up.
