It would appear that the "Join Tracks" issue is still alive and well.
I imported an audio book last week and was NOT able to "Join Tracks"
It would seem that Apple does not care or have a clue about how to fix this issue.
I guess I'll just have to live with it.
Use Quicktime Pro to join.
I have the same problem. I even unisnstalled version 10.4 and tried with my previous version but it could not open my library. I installed it again to no avail. I can not live with it it is an essential feature for classical music. Apple please help!
Why do I have to buy more software to join tracks when I-Tunes was joining tracks before?
I-Tunes should be able to perform this SIMPLE task as a matter of course.
It presents a PITA that takes up valuable space in the I-Tunes application.

I used my desktop computer with 10.5.8 and 10.5.2 (11) I tunes installed and the Join Tracks feature worked perfectly.
Why not with 10.6.8 and 10.5.2.(11) I tunes?
First you have to select the tracks that you want to join. Then use Advanced/join CD Tracks

Jack Nolan, stated in his more than one year old post you replied to, that he fixed the issue.
I'm having exactly the same issue I've been searching everywhere for a solution to this: For a while I've been downloading audio plays, which come in about 30 tracks and which I put onto a CD then re-import after joining all the tracks to make them more manageable. This was working fine until today, when suddenly the "Join CD tracks" option is no longer available but greyed out. I've made sure the CD tracks are listed correctly - by track number - and I've made sure that the original tracks downloaded have been deleted before trying to re-import them. Still nothing - still greyed out. This was working perfectly until today.
I just encountered the same problem. I was ripping a very long audiobook and got to the last CD before it failed. Win 7 64bit and Itunes 10.5.3.3. I tried rebooting and that didn't fix the problem.
Is there any good (hopefully free) alternatives for ripping audiobook files into a single file per CD?
Apple, please fix this. It isn't something that fails all the time, but apparently once it starts failing it continues. Could this be an issue in the size of the Itunes library? I have a very large one. (316 GB). Might there be a registry problem?
I just fixed the problem on my computer! Apparently I had changed the track order to highest to lowest. This is done at the little triangle to the left of the track name. Changing it back to lowest to highest ungrays the "Join CD Tracks" option.
Thanks Dickc1, this fixed my problem. I had changed my track order too!
Since some mornings I can be dense, and maybe others are too đ The little the little triangle to the left of the track name. Changing it back to lowest to highest ungrays the "Join CD Tracks" option! You HAVE to make sure the TRIANGLE is showing! Mine were indeed in the right order, but the triangle wasn't displayed. How frustrating! Thanks all!!
The triangle shows up in the selected column you are sorting on.
It points up for descending sort (smallest to largest) and down for ascending sort (largest to smallest).
Sorry but Weis' problem is not solved by rearranging the order of the tracks. once I load the audiobook CD & select all tracks and I try to "join tracks" under the advanced tab, it works and then it doesn't. I loaded two CDs of a 8-CD book and was able to join tracks. The third CD would not allow this command. I went back & reloaded the first CD and at first the tracks were already joined. I unjoined them and tried to rejoin them & was unable. That command is irregular. It worked and then it doesn't. Sometimes the tracks are already joined, sometimes the command is not live. ??????? corrupted iTunes program???
