How run MacOS Monterey from an external drive in m1 mac

I tried to create external startup disk using an usb c nvme ssd but everytime I tried to install macos it will just skip the external drive and boot from the internal drive. I have tried 3 time but won't work. Is there any way to install Monterey to external drive?

That is very hard to do and it is not clear it with work by USB, even USB-C.

It seems to be hit and mist but works a lot better with a Thunderbolt 2 or 3 connected SSD.

I'll try that. Thanks for the help.

best bet is a Thunderbolt 3, M.2 NVMe enclosure with a good NVMe M.2 SSD.
Yu nee3d a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure vice just a USB-C enclosure. Both use the same cable receptacle. USB-C cables are physically interchangeable with Thunderbolt 3 cables but are not functionally interchangeable.
