Display order keeps getting automatically rearranged when connected to a dual 4k monitor setup to my MBP 2019.

Hello,

I have just started using a dual 4k monitor setup with my Macbook pro 2019 upgraded to the latest Monterey version and I keep seeing the device wake up re-arrange screen order every time the computer goes to sleep.

I have already disabled the Mission Control -> Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use setting under the preferences but it still keeps rearranging them.

It's very annoying as I have to spend a few seconds every time I take a break to re-arrange them back in the order I left them.

This was not an issue when I had my original dual monitor setup but with 2k monitors from Asus. These new monitors are from Samsung can that be causing an issue ?

I even tried using a utility like `displayplacer` but that didn't help either :-/

Does anyone have any recommendation on how I could fix this ?

There are software add-ons that can read out the EDID strings involved and prove that they are the issue. The most well respected at this Is probably SwichResX.

There are no known work-around on the Mac, because the Mac relies on this data to uniquely identify displays and their names and capabilities.

If the Samsung forums is anything like the Apple forums, no problems reported there are likely to result in any Engineering Investigations. Only a Bug report filed at the end of "jumping through ALL the hoops" as you describe is likely to induce any action.

Hi bnimit,

To clarify what you're encountering, do you mean that the additional display isn't arrange where you expect to be in relation to the primary display, or that applications and windows, don't open on the the display you expect them to?

If the latter is the case, right click the icon for the app from the Dock, than choose Options, and select the your preferred display arrangement to set it as a default.

Let us know whether that helps.

The issue is the arrangement of the displays. The applications ofcourse move because the order changes. Like If I have an arrangement of Screen 2 > Screen 1 > Main Laptop display before the laptop goes to sleep. When it wakes up the arrangement changes to Screen 1 > Screen 2 > Main Laptop display in the Display preferences. Then I have to manually drag them back into the original order everytime :(

That sounds like exactly my problem. Now I am not sure if talking to Samsung support would yield any help since most of those folks aren't very technical unless you keep pushing hard and they finally escalate to someone higher up in their technical teams. And that would require going through the same nonsensical questions around restart, reset and change settings and the whole playbook that they should go through before bugging the tech gurus :( .
