Use a different audio input than output on iPad

I was wondering if i could connect my microphone (aux) to my iPad and still use AirPods as the audio output. But whenever i connect the microphone, my iPad thinks it is a pair of headphones, and i can't change the output afterwards. Does anyone know a fix?
