Rain % sign

What does the % mean beside the rain icon? Is there is a eg a 50% of rain or does it relate to the heaviness of the rain, or something else?

The probability that it will rain that day. In the screenshot example, they are forecasting that there is an 80% chance that it will rain on Saturday.
