"A Software update is required to connect to iPhone" What update?

My iMac is OS 11.6.5 Big Sur and iPhone is iOS 15.4.1. What update is going to be performed? I don't want Monterey because I have editing software that might not be compatible with it.

iMac 21.5″, OS X 10.10

I kept researching and found a few responses that said the update merely makes specific updates that only affect the ability of the iMac OS to communicate with the iPhone iOS. They said it didn't update the OS on the Mac. The Apple Support page you linked to didn't say that specifically and I was apprehensive about updating until I read a few other's experiences.

Thank you for your kind efforts to help.
