The Message program is draining my battery even when I am not using it. What can I do to prevent it or reduced the power usage??

I don’t normally use Msg app on MacBook Air but my phone through Verizon acct. My iPhone and MacBook are synced so, occasionally I use the MacBook to answer a text or two.
I went in the app settings turned on the iCloud sharing but turned off few other apps sharing that helped reduced the power drain by some.
Is there any chance you using the Messages app with any non-Apple text messaging services?
The reason for asking is that it was possible to do that at one time in the past. I don't know if you can any more.
