Messages from iphone not loading onto messages on mac

I haven't been able to continue conversations on my mac from my iphone. If I message from my mac, it starts a brand new conversation with the individual I am messaging. How can I fix this?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.15

Enable Messages in iCloud on both devices: Use Messages in iCloud – Apple Support (UK)

You might also want to click that 'Sync Now' button that you'll see when you go to enable it on your Mac.
