I am the sole user of my Mac Mini, so why is an administrator's password needed for me to upgrade?

You should have established your PW when you set up your Mac. This is also the PW you normally would need when logging in.

Because your user id does not have sufficient privileges to change content outside of your home directory and that is why an administrator password prompt occurs when attempting to install applications and operating systems.
