Can't get phone number on messages in mac

I've followed the steps that apple provides, I've checked if my number was linked with my apple id account. But my phone number doesn't even pop up as an option in the 'You can be reached for messages at:' box, and when I've signed out and resigned in with my apple id it still doesn't pop up. Is there a place where I can add it in manually?
