should i erase my stolen ipad?

my ipad was stolen from a car several months ago. i marked as lost but somehow the ability to track it's location was turned off. all was quiet, but today I received an email notification that "Activation Lock is requesting your password". it's clear I'm never going to get the iPad back. should i erase and remove the device so my apple account is more secure?
