Yup that works too assuming you have an Apple Store within a reasonable distance from home, not everyone does.
How do I begin the process to recycle an old iMac (circa 2007) ? Not looking for a trade in or credit but simply recycle and how and where to send it? The Apple website says that I can but does not clearly say how.
Welcome to Apple Support Community.
See: Apple Trade In - Apple. If your old Mac isn't eligible for credit, you can recycle for free.

I bought a new iMac. I have an old one that I purchased before 2010...old enough to still have a DVD/CD player on the side. I'd like to send it back for recycling and not for credit. Where should I send it and is the shipping free?
Note that when ordering a new iMac, the option to trade in or recycle your old computer is part of the purchase process. The recycle process requires you to securely box up and send your old computer (erased of data, of course) using a shipping label the recycling partner provides you for free. However, they ask that you use the shipping label within 7 days. If you intend to continue to use your old computer until the new one arrives (5-7 weeks is typical), the shipping label may no longer be valid. It is probably best to take the old unit to an Apple store in such instances.
I need to recycle my old iMac. I understand it is free through apple but how do I start the process?
Click the link Jack provided to start the process.
After a lot
of checking, the best option I am told is to simply take it to any Apple store to leave it with them
