Password vs Face ID or Fingerprint

Why a less strong authentication method is asked to reinforce a stronger one? Why am I asked for a password, which can easily be stolen, to activate the Face ID or fingerprint ID, which are stronger methods of authentication.

This is annoying especially for the notes, where if you choose a stronger password, it will be difficult to remember. Recently the Note app is asking for password instead of Face ID very often.

Hello mgxgnsk,

"Set a passcode on your device to help protect your data. If your device supports Touch ID, you can often use your fingerprint instead of your passcode. If your device supports Face ID, you can use face recognition instead of your passcode. Your device will require your passcode when you do the following:

  • Turn on or restart your device
  • Press the Home button or swipe up to unlock your device (you can change this)
  • Update your software
  • Erase your device
  • View or change passcode settings
  • Install iOS or iPadOS Configuration profiles"

You can read more about it here: Use a passcode with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Best Regards.

Hi gxgnsk,

If you find you're entering in your password more often, check on your current awareness features with the steps here: Turn Attention Aware features on or off on your iPhone or iPad Pro

Additionally, the steps for checking your TrueDepth camera and ensuring your face is visible here can assist: If Face ID isn't working on your iPhone or iPad Pro

If the issue remains, reach out to Apple Support directly to further assist.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply... but ... my device periodically asks for password instead of face id when I want to access a locked note.

For me it is strange to require a less strong method to activate a stronger method of authentication. This is a point I was making, not how to use the Face ID or the password. Am I the only one?
