Mac Mini M1

I bought this thing because of Apple's lauded superiority in graphics/sound, yet there's no way to play a video encoded with x265 and 5.1 audio. Even VLC player for Mac won't do it and has almost none of the preference options VLC player for Windows has. File plays fine on a PC right out of the box. Have I been misled by advertising?

Dunno much, VindalooJones, but VLC will play 5.1 audio encoded stuff… you have to choose Encoded Digital Audio on playback and have general audio output be HDMI, if you hold down the “Option” key and click on the speaker icon it’ll show you all available audio inputs and outputs… if hdmi isn’t there, you may have to play around in Audio MIDI Setup, in Utilities folder.. you could try usb-a audio as an output… and either a usb-a dac or usb-c dac that has either Toslink or Coaxial digital audio outputs… eg this one : https://www.amazon.ca/Syba-Stereo-Headphone-Amplifier-SD-DAC63057/dp/B009WN7QT4/ref=sr_1_7?gclid=EAIaIQobChMItZj9_pTE9wIVx8LCBB21jgOYEAAYASAAEgJnZPD_BwE&hvadid=588814328397&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9001386&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=16311814656868342194&hvtargid=kwd-319703219753&hydadcr=27681_14531755&keywords=amazon%2Busb%2Bdac&qid=1651609544&sr=8-7&th=1 and this for usb-c as an example : https://www.amazon.ca/Reiyin-Optical-Coaxial-Converter-Decoder/dp/B07ZSQV8JX
