What Decides the 'Default Body Style' in Pages?

This question is a little odd. Bonus points to whomever can answer it.

I am using Pages for iPad. Using the Blank document template, the paragraph style is "Body", found underneath the "Heading Red" style, 7th item in the list. Create a line in any style other than "Body" such as Title, Subtitle, or Heading, press return and the very next line will revert to "Body".

In the Note Taking template you are given sample text in a lorem ipsum format. It starts with a line formatted to "Title", then "Subject", and finally "Body" paragraph styles. If you type over the sample text "Subject" and press return, things start to get interesting. Instead of defaulting to "Body" as shown in the sample text (and in the previous example) it now defaults to the "Body 2" paragraph style, the 8th option in the styles list, right under the "Heading Red" style. This overrides the sample styles in the template itself.

So my question is where is the "default" (for the lack of a better word) paragraph style defined, and how do you change it? The setting has to be somewhere but I can't find it and it is driving me nuts. :-)

Thanks!

Hi Dave,

Title, Subtitle, Heading 1, Heading 2, and some others are "heading" styles. One feature common to most 'headings' and similar uses is that documents, in general, do not have a group of two, three or more "Heading" paragraphs in a row (and particularly, of the same 'heading' level or type) before continuing with the body of the text.

The single Heading type style is followed by either another different level heading type, or by a continuation of the body text. If it is a different level heading, you'd need to change the style in any case—either from the style of the heading to the heading style of the new level, or from the heading style above to the body style of the following non-header body paragraphs.

The automatic return to a body style, if working correctly, saves you the step of changing the style after any header paragraph in the more frequent occasions in which the document continues with body text.

You can alter the "after Paragraph" behaviour of styles by changing the "Following Paragraph Style setting in the Format inspector.

Click on the menu showing Body 2, and select Body.

Repeat for the other 'header' and 'title' styles set to use Body 2 for the Following Paragraph Style.

Unfortunately, this appears to be a non-transferable setting. When I made the Style change on the document created with the available template (Report), then, with no further changes, saved the document as a template, the edited Template (Subtitle 1) did not appear in a document created from the new Template.

May have time to do some further research later today.

Barry

Dave Razorsek,

At this time, you can add your own paragraph styles, rename existing styles, and delete styles that you no longer wish to keep. Any changes you make to styles affect the current document only, not all documents you create using Pages.

Dave Razorsek,

If you change the appearance of text that has a paragraph style applied to it, an asterisk, and in some cases an Update button, appears next to the style’s name in the Paragraph Styles pop-up menu, indicating that the style has an override for that specific text. You can leave the override as is or update the paragraph style to incorporate the change.

Hello Dave Razorsek,

Being able to change the text in Pages is important and you've come to a great place for help. You aren't able to change what default text size and fonts appear when first opening pages and creating a new document. After creating a new document, you can customize the font size and text to the desired settings as outlined in the following article.

Thank you Grace, while this is good information, it doesn’t answer my question.

Any time I select a style other than Body (using the standard blank template) or Body 2 (using the notes template) and start typing, the document reverts to either Body or Body 2 as soon as I hit return for the next paragraph. I can’t set my paragraph style to something obnoxious such as “Subtitle” and write paragraph after paragraph in that style. As soon as I finish a paragraph and press return the document reverts to Body or Body 2.

What is telling Pages to do this? There has to be a setting somewhere that says “when starting a new paragraph use the Body style.” I want to know where that setting is.

Hi Dave,

A search for 'edit title style' in the Pages for iPad manual brought this result:

https://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&src=support_book_topic&locale=en_CA&currentPage=1&bookid=3c89a91a31833799f6d9f83a6000fba1&src=support_book_topic&rurl=https%3A%2F%2Fsupport.apple.com%2Fen-ca%2Fguide%2Fpages-ipad%2Ftana9e5281c1%2F12.0%2Fipados%2F1.0&title=Pages+User+Guide+for+iPad&query=+edit+title+style

No mention of "Title Style" but a couple of hits on editing Paragraph styles, which might prove useful.

Ive also requested this discussion be tansfered to the iWork for ipadOS community, where you'll get responders with more experience with later iPads than mine.
