Will iMessage forwarding work on a iPad2?

How to forward SMS/MMS text messages from your iPhone to your iPad, iPod touch or Mac - Apple Support

Will the above work on an iPad2? Ie sending iMessages automatically from a iPhone on the latest ios to an iPad2 that cannot now be updated - it’s on iOS 9.3.5.
