Turn off Center Stage, and I'm at the bottom of the screen

Using the new Studio Display with Monterey 12.3.1

If I have Center Stage enabled, it keeps my face in the middle of the screen. If I disable Center Stage, it puts my face so far down the screen that I cannot even see my mouth and chin. In order to re-orient the framing so that my face is in the screen, I have to tilt the display so far downward that it's unusable to me.

What the heck?

Hi Gena,

I'm using a new Mac Studio with the Studio Display. My display has the basic tilt-adjustable (not heigh-adjustable) stand. And yes, I have tried adjusting the stand. To get my face properly framed when Center Stage is disabled, I have to tilt the screen as far down as it goes, pointing it more towards the desk than to me.

Again, if I have Center Stage enabled, it keeps me framed properly. But if Center Stage is disabled, the camera shows only the top of my head and a lot of ceiling above it. This is clearly a problem with the built-in camera, not how the display is tilted. It sits exactly where my iMac used to sit, and the iMac's built-in camera had no similar problem. I sat in my chair, kept the screen at the same angle I use for work, and my face appeared in the middle of the frame. With the Studio Display, it's wildly off.

Thanks for getting back with us about this, rob.phil.

Which specific Mac are you using with the Studio Display?

Have you tried adjusting the stand itself? Your Studio Display comes with a built-in stand. Depending on your stand, you can adjust the tilt or tilt and height of your display. If your Studio Display comes with a VESA mount adapter, you can mount it in landscape or portrait and macOS automatically adjusts window and display orientation.

Let us know. Thanks and have a good day!

Hi Merlin,

Yes, I tried re-starting and it had no effect. It's very odd. In order to frame my face properly, I have to tilt the screen down as far as the Studio Display's tilt will go. I suppose I could sit on a couple of phone books, but I never had this problem with the internal camera of my iMac (which I only this month replaced with the Mac Studio and Studio Display).

But with the Studio Display in its normal position, the built-in camera gives me a lovely shot of the ceiling and my forehead. Unless I switch on Center Stage, and then it immediately frames properly.

I'm assuming I'll have to wait for the firmware fixes, but this is truly weird. I'm not used to Apple - normally so dependable - letting things out this hinky.
