When I tried all I seemed to be able to do was to recover 1 contact at a time which was totally useless. There must be a much better way to accomplish this??

To restore Contacts from Time Machine: in Finder menu Go > Go To Folder and key in ~/Library/Application Support

Find AddressBook, highlight it, then enter Time Machine and restore AddressBook from an earlier timeline.
