External 2K monitor scaling for larger system text, apps and items

Hello,

I have recently purchased a 2K Dell monitor "DELL S2722DC".

When the highest native resolution of 2560x1440 is selected, system text, apps and all items are small. Getting to Mac OS (12.3.1) Display settings, and selecting Resolution->Scaled, I see drop down list with several options. Trying all those options, actually there is degradation on resolution and not just scaling. Could you please, provide solution on this?

I would expect a solution similar to the options given for the built-in display, targeting to text size change and not to the resolution change...

Thank you in advance

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 12.3

If you can use Terminal without causing damage, this article has a Terminal solution near the front. You apply ONE Terminal command (displayed over three lines in the article, be sure to select it all before you copy). This command tells macOS your display should be treated in the class of displays with much higher resolutions, HiDPI.

Later in the article is also recommendation for SwitchResX, which can do similar tricks for you, but (mostly) without Terminal.

Hi petros85,

Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities!

Taking a look at Change Displays preferences on Mac,

"Not all options described here appear for all display models, and some options appear only when your Mac is connected to a display."

That is to say, your Dell display may not support the options you are looking for in macOS. You may want to reach out to Dell support for help getting the proper resolution from their display.

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

Thanks for letting us know, petros85,

If your Dell monitor supports scaling, you can follow the steps outlined here to choose a scaled resolution for the display: Change your Mac display’s resolution - Apple Support

Set the resolution for a connected display
If you have more than one display, additional resolution options are available after the display is connected.
1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Displays , then click Display Settings.
2. Select your display in the sidebar, then do one of the following, depending on your display:
• Click the Scaled pop-up menu, then choose a scaled resolution for the display.
• Choose Scaled, then select the resolution you want to use.
You can select “Show all resolutions” to see additional resolutions for the display.
3. Click Done.

Kind regards.

Hi Chris_C1,

Thanks for your feedback. I don't need to change resolution.

From Dell, I get the maximum supported 2560x1440 for this monitor model. I want to change scaling which is up to MacOS.

I see only resolution change below "Scaled" option for the external monitor.

Is there any option to change scaling without changing resolution?

I hope we both understand the difference between scaling & resolution. Thanks
