Do they have to be JPG?

What versions of operating system and iMovie are you using? Can you describe what you mean when you say that you cannot see some of your photos in iMovie? Are you talking about not seeing the photos in the timeline? Are the still images black, or won't they import at all? What format are the photos? From what source are the photos? If you could post a screen shot of what you are describing, that would be helpful.
