Express Transit randomly stops working on iPhone & Apple Watch

I use my Apple Watch to get on the NYC Subway nearly everyday. Most of the time it works great. However, in the last two days, twice I've tried to use it and the screen flashes not accepted, even though on my Watch it says "done". This has happened a handful of time over the last 2 months, but twice in two days is now annoying. I'll try to use my iPhone–same thing. I'll toggle Express Transit off and on, I'll even turn my phone off and on, but it doesn't help. I've missed several trains because of this, making me late to work and appointments, and in the last two days I've had to use a different credit card manually to get on the train. I don't carry my physical Apple Card, so now I'm going miss out of my free subway rides, because every ride after 12 in the same week is free but only if it's on the same method of payment. So this week I won't get the free rides I'm entitled to.

Greetings mtclemons,

Let’s isolate the situation a bit further. Do you have other issues using the Wallet app for other payments on your devices or is it solely happening at subway stations? You mentioned that your Apple Watch shows “Done”, though the terminal does not. Are you being charged for that transaction?

Is Express Mode enabled? Here’s how to double check that Use Express Mode with cards, passes, and keys in Apple Wallet

Thanks.

Hi, thanks for replying. So sorry for the first reply, I was trying to paste from my iPad clipboard... anyway.

I don’t have other issues with using wallet; it is my preferred method of payment and I use it all the time. It does not appear that I’m being charged for the attempts that are not accepted by the OMNY. However, as I stated, when this happens and I have to use a different method of payment, I’m not able to earn my free subway rides after 12 for the week. Obviously I have Express Mode enabled as I said I use my Apple Watch to ride the subway nearly every day, which is even more confusing as to why this randomly happens. This has happened probably 6 or 7 times in the last two months and has caused me to miss my train more than once. Usually if it didn’t work on my watch I’d use my phone and it would work, but yesterday and the day before it would not work on my watch or phone, which is why I had to pay with a physical credit card.
