Iphone 13 Pro overexposed videos compared to 11 Pro?

Hello, just few days ago I bought Iphone 13 Pro to replace my 11 Pro and I am not too happy.

Main reason to do so was to be able to sell 11 Pro for respectable amount of money, but to be true, I was really hyped for better cameras and Dolby Vision recording.

I did some tests and when I record the same thing with both phones, on the screen picture look much better on 13 Pro, but that is just because of better display I guess. After I have sent 11 pro video to 13 pro to compare them on the same display, not only 11 pro "popped" just like Dolby Vision did... the picture on13 pro was overexposed!

Just look at it:

Maybe I don't understand something, but in my opinion the 11pro video shows much more detail in the trees and the sky. The sky in particular is simply overexposed od 13 pro! Just look at it!

Im really thinking to sell 13 pro and to keep my 11 pro...

Apple should fix that. I think the issue is in camera software, not in cameras themselves.

Stanle1,

You mentioned that the video on your iPhone 13 was recorded with Dolby Vision enabled. To test, have you had an opportunity to turn that off and see if you notice a change and what that change is? Additionally, do you notice anything similar in photos not pulled from a video?

Working with Apple directly on the matter was a great step and we'd recommend that continue to be the way you move forward should the situation persist. Contact Apple Support

Thanks.

Welcome Stanle1,

To begin, you have some concerns about the iPhone 13 Pro camera when comparing it to your iPhone 11 Pro camera. We'll do our best to help out with this.

Usually the best way to start troubleshooting is starting with the simple steps first. We'd remove any case or screen protector you may have on the iPhone 13 Pro to test this out.

Make sure the camera lens is clean of debris: Cleaning your iPhone - Apple Support

(So it can capture the best quality videos.)

Check for any saved camera settings, since these settings can impact the quality of the videos:

About the Camera features on your iPhone - Apple Support

Change advanced camera settings on iPhone - Apple Support

Should it persist, we'd recommend working through the normal camera issue troubleshooting steps here: If the camera or flash on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch isn't working - Apple Support

If the camera isn't working

1. Remove any case, accessory, or film that might block the camera or that places a magnet near the camera.
2. Test the camera by trying to take a photo.
3. If the photo is blurry, clean the front and back camera lenses with a microfiber cloth. If you see dirt or debris inside the lens or if the camera lens appears to be misaligned or blocked, contact Apple Support for help with your iPhoneiPad, or iPod touch.
4. Restart your iPhoneiPad, or iPod touch
5. Test the camera again by taking a photo. If your device has a front and rear camera, check if one or both isn’t working. To switch cameras, tap the rotate button .

Lastly, you mentioned purchasing the iPhone 13 Pro a "few days ago". If that's the case, then you have 14 days to return or exchange the iPhone at Apple Store (If it was directly purchased through Apple). You may be able to see their return policy information (depending on region) here: Returns & Refunds - Shopping Help - Apple

Hoping this helps out, take care.

Thanks destiny241, but your answer is actually not helpful at all. To me it sounds very generic and doesn't address the problem. How could a screen protector or a case affect the overexposure of HDR video? During the test the lenses were totally clean without any layer of any type which could affect the quality of the video.

Basically your suggestions are:

a) I am a complete noob

b) my iPhone is "broken"

Neither of these is true. I know how to use a camera and to keep it clean. The phones are identical in terms of settings: the 13 Pro was restored from current backup file. The only difference between them is the 13 Pro had Dolby Vision turned on during recording (and it must be turned on because I WANT to record HDR videos).

Also I had a phonecall regarding this issue with Apple Support and they did a remote diagnosis of my iPhone - everything checked out.

The overexposure on 13 Pro doesn't appear in all lighting conditions. But just take a moment and watch this guy's Youtube video to see another examples of the same problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgP3r3Me6e8

This video proves that I am not the only one who noticed this. I am pretty convinced every iPhone 13 Pro has this issue, but it's not easy to spot because there have to be a specific lighting conditions and a person would have to compare it with another video (with better exposure) to realize this.

AnnieL2, unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to test a video recording without Dolby Vision to see if the overexposure is also there. I am currently waiting for suitable weather conditions to be able to do more tests with different video settings.

I didn't notice similar problems with photos but next time I will test that also.

I really hope Apple will look into this - they have been provided with screenshots. My hope is that with next iOS release this thing will be fixed.
