Your iPad display is broken - and without a functioning display, you cannot unlock or interact with the iPad.

As described, your iPad requires repair - however, unless you have a pre-existing iCloud or iTunes backup of the iPad, your locally stored data has been irretrievably lost.

What I meant was, can I retrieve what is already in the ipad - that I'd downloaded in the past. Unfortunately, I do not know the PW used then. I'd created a case that I never got back too - where I was not successful in opening the ipad to view downloaded content. Now the ipad is broken (fell off a shelf) and I now need to retrieve info from the device to another device i/e computer. Appreciate advice here too. Thanks, Trish

Yes, the data is irretrievable.

So as to ensure security of your data, iOS/iPadOS employs an encrypted file system. The only copy of the encryption key, that is required to decrypt the data, is securely stored in device security chip (the “secure enclave”). Entering your device passcode unlocks the security chip and releases the encryption key to the Operating System - which in turn decrypts your data.

As you cannot interact with the broken iPad, you cannot input your Passcode; without a Passcode, the encryption keys remain locked away; without the encryption keys, data cannot be decrypted - and therefore remains irretrievable.
