This is my first iphone, was on android for years. I was able to edit voicemail to *86,abc123# so when I tapped voicemail, it would dial, pause, and enter the password. I can't find how to do this on the iphone. Google and forum searches have not helped.

It was a combination Verizon problem and me too. When I switched from the android phone, I took the sim card out and put it in the iphone. I was on the phone with Verizon CS for about 30 minutes, she had to go deep in their apps and reset things, then I had to do a network reset on the iphone. If I had used the new sim card that came with the phone, it probably would have taken care of itself. Anyway, I now have Visual Voicemail, and messages play without a problem.

That isn't normally necessary on an iPhone. Once you set up voicemail you can check it on your iPhone in the Phone app with no need to enter a password each time. See: Check your voicemail on iPhone - Apple Support
I think the problem is my voicemail was already set up. I went into Settings>Phone>Change Voicemail Password and it won't let me. I was already with Verizon when I got the phone, just swapped the sim card from the other phone. Maybe I have to go to Verizon support.
