Starting up an M1 in Safe Mode?

Recently I was working with AppleCare to work out some problems with Apple Music, and they suggested that I should restart in Safe Mode to see if the problems I was having were still present then or not. The person I was talking to both told me, then showed me a set of instructions (we were texting) how to do it: "Shut down your Mac, then:

2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the If your Mac starts up to Options with a gear icon - Apple Support window.

3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”

4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again. "

As a new M1 user, and one who has not put Safe Mode to use often, I had to go through about 7-8 attempts before finally succeeding, and I can add a few suggestions:

1-Do not try it with a Bluetooth keyboard. Plug in a wired keyboard and use that-temporarily, if necessary.

2-Once the M1 has shut down (all lights off), wait at least ten seconds before proceeding.

3- Press and hold down the power button until you see the two or three icons appear-one or two

startup discs and the "Options" icon.

4-switch to holding down the Shift key, and click on the disk you want to start up from.

5-When you click on your startup disk, then and only then will you see the words "start up in Safe Mode", and under that disc only.

6- Click on Start up in Safe Mode.

I'm not going to claim that this is the only way to do it. But if you have the kind of struggle that I did, one or more of these added steps might help.

... and searched in vain for the words "Disc will start up in Safe Mode"

Those words don't appear.

Apple's instructions are technically correct, but it's easy to overlook some important points. Suffice it to say it's not as simple as "just hold a Shift key" any more. Sometimes even those instructions needed explanation.

Unable to get the "start up in safe mode" option - Apple Community expands upon Apple's Support document. Ten steps instead of three or four, but they make things explicitly clear. Use it as you see fit.

Right. That's what I started with, and it proved-ah-insufficient for me. Maybe I'm more thick-witted than most, but every step in that description leaves out something without which the Safe Mode is unattainable. I can say that because I made every mistake I could make before finally blundering into Safe Mode. I started with a wireless keyboard, restarted the computer immediately following shutdown, and searched in vain for the words "Disc will start up in Safe Mode" when there icons finally appeared on the screen. I'm sure you were aware of those errors in advance; I was not.
