The rotation lock icon within the iPad Control Centre cannot be suppressed. Assuming that you do not have a very old iPad that includes a physical side-switch, if you cannot see the rotation lock icon, a forced restart of your iPad may be helpful:

I was able to find the orientation lock icon by swiping down from upper right corner of the screen.
