iTunes charges me £9.99 a month but if I cancel I lose 300 songs/tunes is this right??

Are you referring to a monthly subscription to Apple Music? if the subscription ends, you will lose any songs for which you have used the subscription to download for offline listening. It will not affect the other songs in your library (although as always you should keep a backup).
