Is it safe to use different wattage charger with MacBook Pro or Pro

I have a MacBook Pro 15-inch (87W power adapter), MacBook Pro 13-inch (61W power adapter), and 13-inch MacBook Air (30W power adapter). Can I use a power adapter interchangeably with Mac irrespectively? Like 87W or 61W power adapter with 13-inch MacBook Air, 30W or 61 power adapter with MacBook Pro 15 inch, 30W or 87W power adapter with 13-inch MacBook Pro? Is it safe to use a power adapter interchangeably? What are the downsides if I use a lower or higher wattage (than by default) power adapter with my MacBook?

Why not just use the charger designed for the device—

The day before yesterday, I charged my MacBook Pro 15-inch with a 30W power adapter (which came from Apple with my MacBook Air). It was charging very slowly but that's not the issue. The 30W power adapter and the cable were very hot within a few minutes. Is this something I can ignore safely?

Regarding the higher wattage power adapter to use with the MacBook air, I expect it will only consume whatever is needed. It is safe in that perspective. Is my understanding correct?

If you run a hardware diagnostic with your under powered ( and your case in point—over heated) power adapter,

it will generate a similar error dialogue:
