Why would an iPhone connected to to an iMac stop charging in the middle of the night?

I understand that the iPhone software is meant to prevent overcharging and keeping a battery over 80% of full too often. But for the last few weeks, my iPhone SE (second edition) fails to charge overnight, such that I attach it to the iMac at, say, midnight, at a battery charge level of 38%... and at 9:00 am when I come to retrieve the phone, the battery level is at 14%.

I did hear the phone connect to the iMac. I didn't allow the phone to be moved in the intervening hours. What is going on? On other days, the phone has charged to 100%, and just now the phone has connected and disconnected from the iMac several times while I'm typing this.

Help? The phone is running iOS 15.4.1, with 29Gb available of 128.

I'd suggest looking under System Report (Apple in the upper left corner, then About This Mac, and then System Report). Navigate to USB, then click and open up to see what it says when the iPhone is connected. It will have an active power mode and may also indicate if there will be a sleep current, like in the photo I linked earlier from Apple, although that was for a notebook computer. I charge my devices that way and have never had an issue charging a device, but it could be different.
