Delay in charging iPhone 12 from iMac

Recently, I put my iPhone 12 Max Pro on to charge via a USB cable on my iMac, after doing some work on the iMac, then went off to do something else away from the computer. On returning 3 hours later, I was expecting to find my iPhone nearly fully charge. However, it hadn't started charging, and was down to 5% charge! When I activated the screen to check the charge, it gave me a low charge warning, then a few seconds later started chanting from the UDSB cable to the iMac (???). What is going on???!!!

It’s a setting. Go to Menu, System Preferences, Energy Saving and make sure the box to prevent the computer from sleeping is checked.

Possible. I just left the iMac logged in, but it does lock and go to sleep after a while. But even so, one would have thought that it would leave the USB ports powered up. Also, it looked like it never started charging in the first place, even before the iMac locked (looking at the phone's charge history). I have now switched off the option for 'optimise battery charging', so if this will stop this nonsense behaviour.
