Change pulse to tone during incoming phone call

During incoming phone call, how do I change from pulse to tone? Automated systems do not hear my numeric responses.

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Update your carrier settings on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

There is no pulse dialing on a cell phone and it is all touch tone.
